Apakah The Beatles Selalu Dipuja?

Pada dasawarsa 60an, The Beatles mencapai masa jayanya…Mereka disambut bagaikan pahlawan dan diidolakan di mana-mana termasuk di Indonesia. Apakah mereka tidak pernah dibenci atau ditolak?

Ternyata The Beatles pun pernah dibenci dan dicaci maki oleh orang-orang. Hal itu diakibatkan adanya pernyataan John Lennon dalam sebuah wawancara, yang dinilai telah melecehkan Jesus dan orang Kristen. Pada 4 Maret 1966 wawancara John Lennon dengan Maureen Cleave diterbitkan oleh London Evening Standard. Isinya antara lain John mengatakan bahwa : “Kekristenan akan berakhir, menghilang dan tenggelam. Aku tidak perlu berdebat tentang hal itu karena aku benar dan akan kubuktikan hal itu. Kami lebih poluler dari Jesus saat ini”.

Akibat ucapan John Lennon tersebut, The Beatles dicekal di Amerika. Banyak stasiun radio yang tidak mau menayangkan lagu-lagu The Beatles padahal The Beatles akan melakukan konser di Amerika saat itu. Tentu saja hal itu tidak menguntungkan bagi The Beatles. Untuk menyelesaikan persoalan ini diadakanlah konferensi pers pada tanggal 11 Agustus 1966. Inilah isi kutipan perkataan John Lennon pada konferensi pers tersebut:

John: "If I had said television is more popular than Jesus, I might have got away with it, but I just happened to be talking to a friend and I used the words "Beatles" as a remote thing, not as what I think - as Beatles, as those other Beatles like other people see us. I just said "they" are having more influence on kids and things than anything else, including Jesus. But I said it in that way which is the wrong way." "Well, originally I pointed out that fact in reference to England. That we meant more to kids than Jesus did, or religion at that time. I wasn't knocking it or putting it down. I was just saying it as a fact and it's true more for England than here. I'm not saying that we're better or greater, or comparing us with Jesus Christ as a person or God as a thing or whatever it is. I just said what I said and it was wrong. Or it was taken wrong. And now it's all this."

Akhirnya masalah itu bisa terselesaikan, setelah Pers Amerika menganggap John sudah melakukan permintaan maaf kepada publik Amerika, dan konser the Beatles pun bisa berlangsung kembali, walaupun merupakan konser terakhir The Beatles yang pernah ada.
